After the party, Strix dropped me home again and I snuck in to hear raised voices coming from Etienne’s study. Not really thinking about logistics after a few drinks, I crept over and hovered outside.

“Of course, she’s not pregnant!” Rune said snidely. “You are chasing a myth, Father.”

“Your mother–”

“Was not pregnant when you forced Grandma Vi to turn her!” he hissed, vehemently.

“You are finally admitting you were born, then?” Grandma Vi asked, her voice just as snide and all-knowing as Rune’s.

“It is impossible for our two kinds to procreate,” was Rune’s answer and I was sure Grandma Vi was just as cognizant as me that it wasn’t actually an agreement on Rune’s part.

“You don’t know that,” Etienne said, his voice small.

“No,” Rune admitted, almost like a taunt. “But neither do you.”

There was silence a moment. I imagined the two men facing off against each other, fuelled by hate and rage.

Then Rune said evenly, “You may as well come in now, Evangeline.”

I cleared my throat and stepped into the doorway. “I didn’t mean–”

“Of course, you didn’t.” All Rune had for me was contempt. Not that I was surprised, but it seemed excessive even for him.

“How did you know–?”

Rune huffed. “Your heart has a very…unique signature.”

“I heard a mortal heart, nothing more,” Grandma Vi said, and I had a feeling she was stirring shit. I wasn’t going to risk Rune’s reaction if I encouraged her, though.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“Take her back to her room, Erasmus,” Etienne said dismissively. “She could obviously do with a good sleep.”

I was going to argue, but then realised that I wasn’t being chastised for coming home a little drunk, so I was going to take the win and be grateful.

Rune grumbled until Grandma Vi glared daggers at him and he huffed and directed me out.

Halfway up the stairs, I said, “I’m sure this is fast enough. Go fuck and feed a servant and you can probably convince your dad that you did your duty.”

Rune growled but said nothing until we got to my door, then he pushed me against the wall beside it. He seemed to take a deep breath, which only served to make him angrier.

“Did you enjoy your date?” Rune asked snidely, saying the word as though it was something dirty.

I glared at him. “Do you have no one else in this town to torment? Doesn’t your harpy queen demand her own date on a Friday night?”

His lips rippled, giving me the exact response I’d been hoping for. “I don’t date, least of all Venette.”

“I’d tell her just how little she means to you, buy she’s so arrogantly deluded about what she is to you that she’d probably kill me for the insult,” I said flippantly.

“No one touches a le Rege.”

“I’m not a le Rege, Rune. Or have you forgotten that?”

“No one touches you.”

I snorted. “I mean, Strix does.”

He pressed into me, his leg slipping between my leg tantalisingly, as pissed off as I’d ever seen him.

“You do so love your empty
